By the time I was a teenager, every family gathering included a game of Scrabble. The card table would be set up in the middle of the living room and word play would ensue. Sort through any set of pictures of a family Christmas, Thanksgiving, or whatever, and you’ll probably find a shot of two or more people fiddling with little wooden tiles.
So it will be no surprise when I tell you about my latest obsession: Words With Friends. All the best of Scrabble with all the best of technology! I’m not sure why the copyright laws allow it but this is a nearly Scrabble game app for your iPhone. The board layout is modified to fit the screen nicely with all the familiar double letter/words, triple letter/words. It has about the same distribution of letters although the point values are a bit different. What I love is that unlike games of yore which tied you down for a couple of hours, these games are played over a matter of days. Whenever I have a few minutes to kill, I can pull up a current ongoing game and make a play. And, the app has a nice little chat feature so that you can make comments about each other’s plays.
Andrew introduced the game to me a couple of weeks ago and very soon playing just with him was not enough. Through the magic of technology (and Facebook), games can be picked up at a moment’s notice. So download the app (it’s free!) and send me a game: kwood0901
